The old oven sits neatly between two cupboards. Its replacement looks almost identical online. It is tempting to assume the new one will slide straight in.
But a size label such as “60cm” is only a starting point. Before buying a used built-in oven, compare its installation drawing with your cabinet opening. Then check ventilation, connections and door clearance.
A few measurements now can save a difficult conversation on delivery day.
Understand the three different oven measurements
Product listings can include several dimensions. They describe different things, so make sure you compare like with like.
| Measurement | What it describes | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Overall appliance size | The oven’s external dimensions, according to its specification | Helps identify the physical unit and front-panel size |
| Installation opening | The cabinet space required by the manufacturer | Determines whether the cabinet suits the appliance |
| Internal capacity | Cooking space, usually stated in litres | Helps assess cooking needs, but does not establish cabinet fit |
An oven’s front panel may overlap the opening behind it. Measuring that visible panel alone will not tell you the cabinet’s usable width.
Bosch’s oven buying guide distinguishes several size formats, including standard and compact ovens. Use these categories to narrow your search, then check the exact model’s installation instructions.

Identify the existing oven before removing anything
Photograph the model label if it is safely accessible. Keep the current manual or installation drawing if you have it.
The old model gives the seller useful context. However, a different oven from the same brand may still need a different opening or connection arrangement.
Do not pull an installed oven out yourself just to measure behind it. Arrange safe removal or inspection with a qualified installer. This is particularly important when connections are concealed.
If the property is rented, confirm any replacement arrangements with the landlord before ordering.
Record the cabinet opening
Once the opening is accessible, measure its usable width, height and depth. Note shelves, brackets, pipes or other obstructions rather than assuming the whole cabinet is empty.
Take measurements at more than one point. A narrow section or projecting fitting can matter even when the front opening looks generous.
Use this worksheet when discussing a replacement:
| Item to record | Your kitchen | Requirement for the proposed model |
|---|---|---|
| Clear opening width | ___ mm | ___ mm |
| Clear opening height | ___ mm | ___ mm |
| Usable depth | ___ mm | ___ mm |
| Shelf or support arrangement | Photograph / notes | Installer to confirm |
| Ventilation openings | Photograph / notes | Check installation manual |
| Connections and their location | Photograph / notes | Installer to confirm |
| Door opening and handle clearance | Photograph / notes | Check model and layout |
Keep all measurements in millimetres to avoid mixing units. Send photographs alongside the numbers, especially when the cabinet has an unusual shape.
Compare the drawing, not just the listing title
Ask for the full model number of the used oven. Request its installation instructions before paying for delivery.
As an illustration, Electrolux publishes a dimension guide for model KOH2H00BK. It distinguishes product dimensions from the cutout and directs buyers to the installation manual. Those figures apply to that model, not every built-in oven.
If a seller only provides a general width, ask for the missing details. “It should fit” is not a substitute for checking the drawing.
Where measurements are close, have an installer assess the opening. Avoid assuming a small mismatch can be solved by forcing the unit into place.
Check ventilation and surrounding appliances
A cabinet needs to accommodate the oven’s specified airflow arrangement. Existing gaps may not match a replacement model’s requirements.
The space above or below the oven also matters. For example, an oven fitted beneath a hob needs to work with that particular layout. Ask the installer to check both appliances’ instructions.
Do not use a generic clearance number from another model. Confirm the requirements for your oven, cabinet and installation position.
If cabinet changes are required, get their cost before buying. A lower appliance price can become less attractive once extra work is added.
Make sure the door can open comfortably

Picture yourself lifting a tray out of the oven. Will the open door leave enough working room? Could its handle meet a nearby drawer, wall or cupboard?
Check the route through the kitchen as well as the opening itself. An oven can fit inside the cabinet yet be awkward to use every day.
For an eye-level installation, consider the height at which you will handle cookware. Ask the installer to confirm that the cabinet support and position suit the unit.
Confirm connections and the condition of the used unit
Physical fit is only one part of compatibility. Have the installer confirm that the appliance’s electrical or gas requirements suit the available supply and connection.
Ask the seller what operational testing was completed. Check the door, glass, seal, controls and included racks or trays. Request photographs of any damage before arranging delivery.
Also ask whether any mounting parts are missing. A small missing component can delay installation even when the oven itself is suitable.
Finally, clarify the warranty and the total cost. Include delivery, fitting, any cabinet work and removal of the old appliance where required.
Common replacement questions
Will every 60cm built-in oven fit the same opening?
Do not assume so. Compare the exact installation dimensions, ventilation requirements and connection details.
Can I replace the oven without replacing the kitchen?
Often the decision starts with finding a compatible model. Whether cabinet changes are needed depends on the existing opening and the replacement’s instructions.
Can a compact oven fill a taller opening?
Not by itself in every setup. Ask about a manufacturer-supported arrangement and suitable cabinetry. Do not improvise a filler or support without an installation assessment.
Send the details before choosing your oven
